Recap of weekend’s international championships results !

The weekend of 27 and 28 February 2022 was full of competition on the hockey planet. We take a look at the results and, as a bonus, a retrospective on the Belgian championship !

The London Ladies, queens of the kingdom !

Driven by its European vice-champions, the London Ladies won their fifth title in seven years. Captain Rachel Hickey’s teammates did not concede a single goal during the competition which took place at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds. An outstanding defence combined with an efficient attack symbolised by Charlotte Cooper’s 18 goals, co-top scorer in the championship. A title she shares with Katy Firth, Orkney’s captain.

The Scottish team won division 2 followed by the Yorkshire Lasses (second team from Yorkshire) and the Lancashire Ladies team. The Irish team, led by captain Laura McCarron, finished fourth.

U24 Championship Turkey : Kocaeli again and again

After their triumph at the last U19 championship in October 2021, Deniz Yıldızları Sports Club (DYK) are confirming their supremacy in the youth categories. At the end of a three-day competition that brought together 21 men’s and 11 women’s teams at the Ankara University swimming pool, Kocaeli won the U24 championship for both men and women.

The women’s team gave their opponents no chance, including in the final, which they won 8-0 against the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) team. ODTÜ failed to get their revenge in the men’s final, which ended 3-0, but still in favour of DYK.

Orka takes the lead in the Belgian championship

On Sunday 20 February the first round of the Belgian championship took place in Antwerp. Winners of the Spanish championship, Orca split into two entities for this national competition. At the end of this first round, the two teams from Bilzen are leading ahead of the Dutch team Astacus. It is worth noting that this is the first championship for the Bruges team Zwarte Zwanen.
