During the weekend of 25 and 26 February, many hockey events took place. In the UK, the British Octopush Association organised a « National Team Player of the Year » award in addition to the women’s national championships. In Slovenia, at Kranj, the annual tournament was played between a few teams. It’s time for the weekend review.

Leeds Women’s National Championships

On Saturday 25 February, the British Women’s National Championships were played in Leeds, England. A tournament with eighteen teams and two pools. In the first division, London Ladies finished in first position, ahead of Southsea in second and Yorkshire Ladies who completed the podium.

In the second division, Scottish club of Orkney placed first, followed by Bristol and Plymouth. At the end of the tournament, Orkney’s player, Katie Firth was awarded the trophy for best scorer of the tournament. Sussex & Wickham Ladies player Beccy Lord was awarded MVP of the tournament.

The best players of the British national teams

During the weekend’s national championships, three players won the ‘Best Player of the Year’ trophy according to their categories. In the Elite category, Rachel Hickey of London Ladies (or West London Open team) is named the best player of the year, in the U24 category, Lauren Omnet of Pembroke, and in the U19 category it’s Bea Brooks of Plymouth. The players are nominated by their respective coaches, namely Tim Dale for the Elite, Georgina Lamble for the U24 and Aaron Lyndsey, Tom Burges and Belinda Archer for the U19.

The Kranj tournament (Slovenia)

We are flying to Slovenia now, for the annual tournament in Kranj, where thirteen teams, divided in two pools, played the competition. In the Top Group, Egyszusz, a Hungarian club, headed the ranking. In the Sub-Top Group, Marlin, another Hungarian club, finished first.
